How do I assess student progress?

I use a variety of methods to determine how students are doing. I use "products", which are assignments that they create, I use "observations", which I conduct regularly to note their understanding and ability, and I use "conversations" as well. All three work in tandem to better allow me to see what each student knows, understands, and can do. This is known as "Quality Assessment", as it allows students a variety of ways in which to show their learning. Students always have time in class to work on projects, and if they use their time well, students should not have a lot of homework unless they need further practice, time, or review. |
Work habits are important to develop, and our school has a rubric which guides us in our assessment of a student's work ethic. We typically focus on the following: punctuality, preparedness, attitude, participation, focus, cooperation, and assignment completion/submission. Please click on the button at the left for more. Students are asked to self-assess at different points during the year so that they can reflect on, take ownership of, and work on improving their own work habits. This self-assessment is done in more student-friendly language. Please take a look at your child's self-assessment today if you haven't already, and discuss how they are doing.

What about letter grades?
A student, as well as the parent, should be aware of how they are progressing. How can they know? This can be known from feedback received on paper, in conversations, and on FreshGrade. If your child is not bringing home feedback (such as an assignment with comments, marks, etc.), or you are having problems with FreshGrade, please contact me. I do not use percentages; rather, I use rubrics that contain criteria. Students are often assessed on a 5-point scale (a 1 would not be meeting expectations, and a student would revise their work in such cases to meet basic expectations).
5/A Exceeds Expectations
4/B Fully Meets Expectations
3.5/C+ Meets Expectations
3/C Minimally Meets Expectations
2/C- Minimally Meets/Not Yet Meeting Expectations (some revision may be required)
